Who are the most recommended exterior painters in Canberra?

No one publishes a verified ranking, so “most recommended” in practice means Google reviews, word of mouth, or a directory that charges painters for the placement. Read the reviews for exterior jobs specifically. Interior work says very little about how someone handles weathered timber, rusted metal and height.

For an exterior, check four things: how they prepare, which system goes on which surface, how they reach the high sections, and whether the quote names the number of coats. Preparation is invisible in a finished wall and it is the whole difference between a repaint that lasts and one that lifts in three years.

How do I know if my house exterior needs repainting?

Check the north and west walls first, because they take the most sun. If the colour leaves powder on your hand, if the paint is cracking or lifting at the edges, or if bare grey timber is showing through, the coating has stopped protecting the surface and it is time.

The signs worth walking around for:

• Chalking, a fine powder that comes off on your fingers
• Hairline cracking across a surface, or paint flaking at weatherboard edges and window frames
• Bare timber gone silver-grey, or rust bleeding through on metal
• Gaps opening in the caulking around frames and joins
• Dark staining or mould on shaded southern walls
• Colour under the eaves that no longer matches the exposed walls

Repainting is cheaper before the surface underneath is damaged. Once timber has weathered open or metal has started to rust, the repair work is what pushes the price up, not the paint. Ranges are on house painting cost in Canberra.

Why is paint peeling on my weatherboards?

Peeling weatherboards almost always mean the coating lost its grip on what was underneath, not that the paint was bad. The three usual causes are moisture getting behind the boards, a previous coat applied over a dirty, chalky or glossy surface without sanding or priming, and acrylic put straight over old oil-based enamel.

Common contributors on Canberra homes: timber that was never primed on the back or the cut ends, blocked or leaking gutters and downpipes soaking the boards, sprinklers hitting the wall, and the frost-to-heat swing moving timber under a coating too brittle to follow it.

The fix is scraping back to sound material, sanding, priming the bare timber, then two coats. Painting over a peel puts the same failure back in a new colour. On older homes the existing coating may contain lead and wall sheeting may contain asbestos, so unknown substrates get treated carefully. We hold asbestos awareness and crystalline silica awareness.

When is the best time of year to paint a house exterior in Canberra?

Spring and autumn. September to November and March to May give Canberra the steadiest run of days warm enough for a coating to cure and mild enough that it does not skin off in direct sun.

Winter is the hard one here. Frost, heavy dew and overnight temperatures below zero leave surfaces cold and damp well into the morning, and exterior coatings carry a minimum surface temperature on the data sheet that a Canberra winter morning does not meet. Summer works but has to be sequenced: follow the shade, start on the east side early, and stay off anything hot to touch, or the coat sets before it bonds.

Because those windows are short, the inspection matters more than a fast quote. If you want an exterior done in a particular season, book the look in ahead of it. Interior work has no season, so a winter interior repaint and a spring exterior is a sensible way to split a big job.
