How long does it take to repaint a 3 bedroom house interior?

Around four to seven working days for a full interior repaint of a three bedroom home, covering walls, ceilings, trims and doors. A single room on its own is usually one to two days.

What stretches it: heavy patching and crack repair, stain blocking before the topcoats, a colour change dark to light that needs an extra coat, high or raked ceilings, and detailed trim work. An occupied home runs slower than an empty one, because each room is set up and packed down rather than the whole house being opened at once.

Drying time sets the floor on the schedule as much as the painting does. Two coats on a wall need the first coat properly dry, and in a Canberra winter an unheated room takes longer to get there. Ranges and timings by job size are on house painting cost in Canberra.

Can painters work while we live in the house?

Yes. Most of the interiors we repaint in Canberra are occupied, and the work is planned around that. We paint room by room so you keep a usable house rather than losing all of it for a week.

In practice that means one or two rooms at a time, furniture moved to the centre and covered, drop sheets down before anything is opened, and tools and tins packed away at the end of each day. Doors and trims are sequenced so nothing is left wet across a doorway you need overnight. Most interior wall and ceiling work is water-based acrylic, so the smell clears quickly.

Before we start, tell us the rooms that have to stay usable, the days nobody is home, and whether there are pets or small children. We agree the order of rooms first, then work to it.

What is the cost difference between DIY and professional house painting?

DIY saves the labour, and labour is the larger share of a painting quote. Materials are the smaller part. So the honest comparison is paint, sundries and your own weekends against a Canberra price of roughly $900 to $1,800 in 2026 for a single room done properly with walls, ceiling, trims and doors.

What the professional price buys is the part you cannot see later: washing, sanding, patching and priming, two coats rather than one, and cutting in that holds a straight line at the ceiling. A cheap job and a DIY job fail the same way, by painting over the problem instead of fixing it.

DIY makes sense on a single low-ceilinged room you can take your time over. It stops making sense at height, on exteriors, on anything needing stain blocking, and when a sale date is fixed. A workmanship warranty only exists on work someone else did. Full ranges are on house painting cost in Canberra.
